Fairy Trumpet by Dr. Norm BleisteinMany years ago I did my own black and white darkroom work. It was a lot of fun, but a single image often took three hours or more. Now with PhotoShop (or other image processing software), that process is often as little as five minutes, rarely more than thirty minutes. Furthermore, all of this is possible in color as well as in black and white. One can start from a digital photo image, a scan of a print or a
scan of a negative or slide. No matter! It is this new digital darkroom that makes image processors of all of us.

There is some issue of whether or not this is still "photography." I would point out that almost every professional image you have ever looked at has been processed and modified for enhancement. The new way only makes all of that much easier. Photographic heroes, such as John Fielder and David Meunsch, scan their negatives in enormous sizes and make those large spectacular pictures by processing and printing in a digital darkroom. Now, it's our turn!
